Reading Resources

Supporting Reading at home

Sharing a book at home, from Reception to Year 6, has endless benefits.  From developing language and communication skills to providing escapism and bringing about a sense of comfort, it should never be underestimated. Please see resources attached for ideas linked to sharing a book at home.

In terms of the children’s own independent reading, at the Junior School, we ask that all children read at least 3 times a week at home to develop their fluency, intonation/ prosody and comprehension.

Here are some top tips for supporting reading at home if it doesn’t always come naturally:

  • Take it in turns to read the book (a sentence/ page each)
  • Mix up fiction with non-fiction- reading recipes, websites, magazines etc. (these will all count as weekly reads!)
  • Visit our local library and get your child to get excited about the huge number of books available!
  • Help your child to create a cosy reading area that they are excited to read in
  • Use the 30 Reads 'Top Reads' year group booklist as a starting point for new titles/ authors or click on this link which will take you to a list of award-winning/ shortlisted authors: https://www.lovereading4kids.co.uk/book-awards
  • Don't forget our 'Monthly Must Reads' recommendations which appear in each of school newsletter blogs. The monthly must reads are 'hot off the press' recommendations if you're in the need of some fresh reading inspiration.
